Art Exhibition
Space 14 created 3D letters using scrunched up newspaper. We then used material for our paper mache. After it was dry we painted our letters and decorated them.
We also made penguins from empty soft drink bottles.
On Thursday night our parents came to see our art week. We were also able to share our blog with our parents.
Space 14 are proud of what we have created.

Garden Party
We have been reading stories written by Margaret Mahy. One of her stories is "The Garden Party."
Today we had a garden party but it had to be in the classroom because it rained. We made hats and decorated them. We also had fairy bread and other goodies.

Gifted Kids Sharing Evening
On Thursday 20 September there was a GKP sharing night. We all had made a game and we shared it with the guests. My game is a bit like snakes and ladders but has challenging questions.
Zac also shared his amazing art work with us as well.
Thank you for inviting me to see what you have been doing at GKP. I thoroughly enjoyed having a go at your game. Gosh, some of those questions were tricky. Mrs C

Skitch and Fotopedia
Space 14 learnt about 2 new apps on the ipads. We explored fotopedia to find a photo that we liked. We print screened the photo and then opened the photo in Skitch. Using the tools in Skitch we added describing words to our photo.
Check out our work by clicking on the book below.

Rainbow Fish to the Rescue
After listening to the story, we had to retell the story in our own words. We then assessed our story against a SOLO rubric.

Little Bird Tales
Paula taught us how to use Little Bird Tales. I had the letter "E". I had to find things in the library that started with "e." I had to take a photo of the things that started with "e" and then record what they were.

Change Experiments
Butter
We did an
experiment where we turned cream into butter. We poured cream into a container
and took turns at shaking the container. First the cream turned into whipped
cream and then into butter.
At first the fat
was spread throughout the cream and we couldn’t see it. When we shook the
container the fat particles all came together. We got to try the butter on
bread with some different spreads. It was yummy.
Lemon Juice
We wrote messages with
lemon juice. We could not see our messages until we ironed our paper.
The Lemon juice
had acid in it. It made the paper weak. When we ironed the paper the heat made
the acid left on the paper turn brown. We could then see our message.
Eggs
We put eggs into
water, orange juice, coke and vinegar.
After a week nothing
had happened to the egg in water.
The shell of the egg
in the orange juice went bumpy.
The shell of the
egg in coke went dark brown.
The egg in vinegar
had the most changes.
The acid in the
vinegar dissolved the shell. It separated the calcium and the carbonate that
make up an egg shell.
The egg also got a
lot bigger.

We put some eggs in some different liquids to see what would happen.
We put the eggs in vinegar, water, juice and coke.
We looked at the eggs each day to see what changes had happened.
Nothing happened to the egg in water.
The egg in the orange juice had lumps on it. We were able to rub off some of the shell.
The egg in the coke looked as though the coke was soaking into the shell. The shell was turning brown. The shell looked as though it had a big crack in it.
The egg in the vinegar was floating. There was scum on the top of the liquid. There were lots of bubbles on the shell.
We were able to rub the skin off. The egg was a lot bigger than when we put it in the liquid. The egg felt very rubbery.

Hinemoa and Tutanekai
After we had listened to the legend of Hinemoa and Tutanekai we used our visualising strategy to create a picture of part of the legend.
Manaia's mum sent us some photos of Hinemoa's rock at Owhata Marae at Hinemoa Point and also Hinemoa's pool on Mokoia Island. She was lucky enough to stay there last week. Thank you for the photos.

Visualising Strategy
For reading we are learning about a new strategy called visualising. We are learning to use the text to form pictures in our mind to help us understand what we are reading.
Mrs Crockett read a description of a nogard to us. As she read it we had to draw what was in our mind.
Mrs Crockett read a description of a nogard to us. As she read it we had to draw what was in our mind.
The nogard is an animal. It has an oval-shaped body. It has a long neck and tail. The top of the neck, back and tail are covered with a row of triangular-shaped plates. The nogard’s head is shaped like a long triangle. It has big eyes and eyebrows that stick out. It also has big nostrils. Its body is covered with scales. The nogard has four short legs. At the end of each leg is a foot with five toes. Each toe has a sharp claw at the end. The nogard has two wings attached to its body. These are located behind the front legs towards the top of its back. Nogards are usually green but change to a deep purple during the winter months.
This is what we thought a nogard looks like.

Visitors from Sendai
Our Sendai Visitors on PhotoPeach
Earlier this term we had a group of visitors from Sendai in Japan. The girls talked to us about Japanese clothing. They then spent some time with us, reading, playing games and teaching us how to write out names in Japanese.
